Replacing Published Data Source When Original Data Source No Longer Exists

Question

How to replace published data source when original data source no longer exists. 

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Tableau Server

Answer

  1. In step 1 of the Tableau Server Data Connection dialog after opening the workbook, enter in the <server name>/<site name>. Please note that the server name and site name are case sensitive. 

  2. In step 2, enter in the Repository Url of the data source 

    1. Click on the name in the Tableau Server browser window (refer to screenshot 1)

    2. Copy the Repository Url exactly to use in Tableau Desktop (refer to screenshot 2)

  3. Click Connect in the Tableau Server Data Connection dialog. Tableau will prompt for a username and password to the site defined in step 1 on Tableau Server. Enter in the credentials

  4. Select the site where the data source is located and Click OK

  5. Click Connect in step 4 of the Tableau Server Data Connection

  6. Name the connection as desired and click OK to exit the dialog
