Question

How to download the sample data sets Superstore or World Indicators, or how to re-add these sample data sets to the Saved Data Source list (if they have been removed).

Environment

Tableau Desktop

Answer

Option 1

  1. Connect to data file "Sample - Superstore.xls" or "World Indicators.tde"
    1. By default, this file will be in a location like: C:\Users\{USER NAME}\Documents\My Tableau Repository\Datasources\{10.3}\en_US-US
  2. If connecting to "Sample - Superstore.xls", drag "Orders" into the connection window.
  3. Navigate to a worksheet.
  4. Navigate to Data > {data source name} > Add to Saved Data Sources.
  5. Save the *.tds file.

Option 2

  1. Delete the corresponding minor version folder from the My Tableau Repository\Datasources folder
    1. By default, this file will be in a location like: C:\Users\{USER NAME}\Documents\My Tableau Repository\Datasources\{10.3}\
  2. Open Tableau Desktop.

Additional Information

When a minor version (e.g. 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, etc...) of Tableau Desktop is opened for the first time, then Tableau Desktop automatically creates a folder for that version in the My Tableau Repository > Datasources folder that contains the data files for Superstore and World Indicators (Sample - Superstore.xls and World Indicators.tde), as well as the saved data source files for both of these data sources (Sample - Superstore.tds and World Indicators.tds)

The *.tds files are what Tableau Desktop uses to populate the Saved Data Source list.
