Filtering View to Show Only Max Date Value for Each Category

Question

How to filter a text table to show only the latest date value for different categories.

Answer

Step 1: Connect to data

  1. Open Tableau Desktop.
  2. Download and connect to the attached sample data.xlsx.

Step 2: Create calculated field

  1. Select Analysis > Create Calculated Field.
  2. In the Calculated Field dialog box, name the calculated field Find Max Date (LOD).
  3. Enter the formulas as below and click OK:
[Date End] = { FIXED [ID] : MAX([Date End]) }

Step 3: Create the view

  1. Drag ID to the Rows shelf.
  2. Drag Name to the Rows shelf.
  3. Drag Phase to the Rows shelf.
  4. Right-click and drag Date Begin to the Rows shelf, select Date Begin (Discrete), and then click OK.
  5. Right-click and drag Date End to the Rows shelf, select Date End (Discrete), and then click OK.
  6. Drag Find Max Date (LOD) to the Filters shelf.
  7. In the Filter dialog box, select True and click OK.
