Error "Initialization failed" Upgrading Tableau Server

Question

When upgrading Tableau Server, the following error might occur:

Answer

Option 1

On the computer where Tableau Server is installed, perform the following steps using an Administrator account:
  1. Stop Tableau Server.
  2. Perform a backup.
  3. Uninstall Tableau Server.
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Install the new version of Tableau Server.

Option 2

If your AntiVirus was scanning the Tableau Server folders (antivirus is 'using' the files), please work with your IT team to exclude the folders from the AntiVirus scan or temporarily disable AntiVirus. For more information, see Before you install... in Tableau Help.
