Question

How to change the default Tableau Desktop or Tableau Reader version used to open workbooks.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Tableau Reader

Answer

Option 1 (Windows)

Uninstall and re-install the desired default version of Tableau Desktop or Tableau Reader. For example, if you would like Tableau Desktop 10.0 to open workbooks by default, uninstall and then re-install Tableau Desktop 10.0. For more information, see Download and Install Tableau Desktop.

Note: You will need administrator rights on the computer to perform Option 2. Work with your IT team if such permissions are not granted on your computer.

Option 2 (Mac)

  1. Ctrl+Click on the .twbx workbook.
  2. Select Get Info.
  3. Change the application in the "Open with:" drop down.
  4. Select the Change All button and then choose Continue.
This will change all files with the extension .twbx to be opened with the desired version. This can also be done for the .twb file extension.

Additional Information

Note: Installing software updates the Windows registry. By default, workbooks will open in the most recently installed version of Tableau Desktop or Tableau Reader.
