Backup size differs greatly between versions

Question

After upgrading, new backups are significantly smaller than the backups created by the previous version.  How to determine where this difference comes from?

Environment

  • Tableau Server 8.2, 9.2
  • MS SQL Server

Answer

The best method to check for missing content is to compare the contents of each backup against the live server by restoring the backup to a test server.  Comparisons are then straightforward as far as number of extracts and workbooks, size used on disk, etc.

If manual examination of the backup files is needed, each backup file may be changed to a .zip file, and subsequently opened as such.  The size of contents may then be compared, although doing so thoroughly necessitates referencing the accompanying PGSQL.
