Published: 14 Dec 2016
Last Modified Date: 09 Mar 2017

Issue

In Tableau Desktop 10.1 and Tableau Server 10.1, the following error message might occur when a workbook is being viewed in a browser, opened in Tableau Desktop, or when attempting to refresh an extract:
TableauException: Collation retrieval requires query

In Tableau Desktop 10.1, if the "collation requires query" error is dismissed, a second error message may prompt in a new window :
Warnings occurred while loading the workbook "<workbook file path and name>". The worksheet "<worksheet name>" has not been opened because it is based on the data source "<data source name>" which could not be opened.
<repeats for all sheets>

Environment

  • Tableau Server 10.1.0 - 10.1.3
  • Tableau Desktop 10.1.0 - 10.1.3

Resolution

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 10.2 and Tableau Server 10.2. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Desktop, and Upgrading Tableau Server.

Option 2

If the workbook contains a group created from a combined field, delete the group created from a combined field and create a calculated group instead.

Cause

This behavior is related to a known issue (ID: 594389) that has been fixed in a recent version of Tableau Server and Tableau Desktop.
